Practical application 1st block 3/23/09

Please give a practical application of covalent compounds and ionic compounds. Include various industries and don't forget to give specific examples within that industry.

This should be two paragraphs total, one paragraph summary( IN YOUR OWN WORDS, DON'T COPY AND PASTE FROM WIKIPEDIA) for the covalent compounds and a one paragraph summary for the ionic compounds.

    Ionic Compounds
    Ionic compounds are used in a variety of different areas of industry. Many uses involve or are meant to come in contact with humans. Cosmetics, such as makeup are one. Another is preservatives. Preservatives are put in food and other products to keep them from rotting or decomposing. Cosmetics also require preservatives in them to keep them fresh and functional. Cleaning supplies also contain ionic compounds. Such supples include laundry detergents and cleaners. Disinfectants are commonly contain this type of compound. Livestock feed contains preservatives made of ionic compounds too. They are used min almost every industry imaginable.

    Covalent Compounds
    Covalent compounds are very commonly used in the biochemical industry. They are comnmonly heavily involved in the production of antibody manufacturing. They are also used in the food industry. They provide pressure in canned goods to add more shelf life too the product. Also, the pressure in frozen foods helps prevent frost bitten food. Frost bite on food is when ice crystals form on frozen foods. This can alter the taste of the food or the freshness upon thawing. Unlike ionic compounds, covalent compounds are more heavily involved in medicine and food and have few other noteworthy industrial uses.

  2. Covalent Compounds: a form of chemical bonding known for sharing pairs of electrons between atoms

    Covalent compounds are present in everyday things. Lets start off in the medicinal field. They have been used to treat a variety of diseases and disorders to this very day. The covalent bond CO2 can be used as a refrigerant, in beverages as well as fire extinguishers. When applied correctly, your cancer treatment or even the sterilization of surgical equipment can be linked to covalent compounds.

    Ionic Compounds or Ionic bonds have been used for an array of the conveniences we look over today. First off, ionic compounds can be put to use as an anti-static agent for your clothes, softening agents, cleaning uses etc. Just as well, you may find an electrician using ionic compounds for preparing redox couples or reversible switchable systems. For the food industry, they can work miracles in working to maintain a food's longer shelf life. Without ionic compounds, our easy way of life wouldn't be so.

  3. All ionic and covalent compounds have practical uses used in many different ways in the world. Ionic compound are usually formed from metal and non-metal elements. Some ionic compounds you can find in your house are items such as salt, toothpaste, bathroom cleaner, bleach, baking soda, battery acid, vinegar, and many other items. Ionic compounds are things we use everyday and we don't even realize it.
    Covalent compounds share electrons rather than transferring them. Covalent compounds in your homes are items such as propane, cooking oil, sugars, syrups, personal care products, metals and even furniture. Covalent compounds are formed when two non-metals bond to each other. They are not the same as ionic because they typically have much lower boiling and melting points. Covalent compounds can be found many places just like ionic compounds.

  4. Every Ionic and Covalent compounds have practical applications in household items, medicine, and just the industry. Ionic compounds are held together by two ions, Cations, the positive ones and anions, the negative ones. You can find ionic compounds pretty much everywhere, but i mostly found them in household items. They are found in table salt, baking soda, vinegar, and bleach. In my house we use some of these items everyday and i didn't even know that they were part of an ionic compound.
    Covalent compounds is a compounds whose atom that is bonded shares electrons rather than transferring them from one to another. A household examples of a covalent compound is soap, sugar, vanilla, syrup, and alcohol. I also found that in the medical field that an x-ray is a covalent bond. It is very interesting to know that these items are covalent compound, because we use them everyday.

  5. Ionic compounds are generally formed from metal and non-metal elements. One product of ionic compound is table salt. They use salt to help preserve food and other products so it can last longer. Cleaning products also have ionic compounds. A lot of house cleaning product has ionic compounds such as laundry detergent and more. There are many other practical applications that has ionic compounds, they are in pretty much everything.
    Covalent compounds are compounds in which the atoms that are bonded share electrons rather than transfer electrons from one to the other. One product that has covalent compounds is paper and we use this all the time. Water is also an important covalent compound. They use water to make pretty much everything; it is basically the base of products. Water is in cleaning products, makeup, moisturizers, such as lotion, and also uses water to penetrate or to cut objects in to shapes. Also our body uses water to survive and to stay hydrated.

    Many household or food are made of either ionic compund or covalent compound. For example, table salt. this is one of teh great example because most of the scientist use table salt to build certain thing like to preseve food, use on certain experiment and technology like food processor. not only that table salt can obtain certain material. Also Ionic compound use in many different way like cleaner etc. that what ionic compound basically using on.

    For covalen bond the best example that is also use in todays technology is water also known as H2O. water not only help our environment it also use in certain auto industry because car needs water to clean it to use in it. also water makes alot of convenient things like water fountain which use in grass/flower. not only that it also creates many technology that we use today for example swimming pool. and green technology that we are going to use later in the future is going to be done too. that's what basically covalent bonding. that's why covalent bonding is used.

  7. Ionic compounds consist of ions held tightly together by ionic bonds. They are usually made up of positive and negative ions, or cations and anions. Two well known examples of ionic compounds are table salt, sodium chloride, and baking soda, sodium bicarbonate. Rust is made from the reaction of iron and oxygen, creating iron oxide. Calcium phosphide is a compound found in incediary bombs with the trade name polythanol for its use in rodenticide. Sodium bromide is another type of salt which is widely used as a sedative.

    Covalent compounds consist of covalent bonds made by the sharing of electrons between atoms. The most common covalent compound is water. Water contains hydrogen and oxygen, which are both nonmetals, making it a covalent compound. Ammonia also consists of two nonmetlas, nitrogen and hydrogen. Ammonia is used today as fertilizer, a refrigerant, and a type of vehicle fuel. Carbon tetrachloride is another covalent compound mainly used in fire extinguishers and as a cleaning agent.

  8. Ionic Compounds have many properties. All ionic compounds form crystals, they are hard and brittle, have high melting and boiling points, and they can conduct electricity when dissolved in water. They are usually formed between a metal and a nonmetal.
    There are many different ionic compounds that have practical uses. Some of these uses include sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, sodium hydroxide is used as a drain cleaner, we use sodium fluoride as toothpaste, sodium hypochlorite is used as bleach, and sodium aluminum phosphate is used as a raising agent in chocolate pudding. The high melting and boiling points of ionic compounds create good electrical conductivity. Many different substances that promote life processes are also ionic compounds.
    Covalent compounds have many properties. In a covalent bond, the electrons are shared. When the electrons are shared equally, it is called a nonpolar covalent bond, and when the electrons are shared unequally, it is called a polar covalent bond.
    Covalent compounds also have a variety of practical uses. Many well known covalent compounds are water, methane (natural gas), and ammonia. Pretty much any hydrocarbon is a covalent compound. Many household covalent compounds include propane (used on a gas grill), cooking oil, various types of oils and fats, sugars, syrups, personal care products, paints, and solvents. There are covalent compounds in furniture as well, such as wood, fabric, and the foam stuffing.

    COVALENT COMPOUNDS:
    How are covalent compounds formed ? Well, covalent compounds are formed when nonmetals bond to another nonmetals. Covalent compounds are used for many things. Some examples they are to treat a variety of diseases and disorders. They are also used in our homes for example cooking oil, paint and care products, but the most typical covalent compound is water there is also natural gas which is a covalent bond
    Ionic compounds: ionic compounds are most of the time formed when metals bond to nonmetals,.some important information about Ionic Compounds is that they are hard and brittle and also form crystals. Ionic Compounds also have high melting and boiling points, and they can conduct electricity when they are dissolved in water. There are a lot of types ionic compounds that have some very good uses. For example sodium chloride which is salt and also sodium fluoride which is toothpaste.

    While ionic compounds are usually formed when metals bond to nonmetals, covalent compounds are formed when two nonmetals bond to each other.

    basically ionic compounds are bonding of metals to nonmetals and covalent is 2 metals bond to each other.Covalent compounds generally have much lower melting and boiling points than ionic compounds. Covalent compounds are soft and squishy compared to ionic compounds, anyway.Covalent compounds tend to be more flammable than ionic compounds. Covalent compounds don't conduct electricity in water. Covalent compounds aren't usually very soluble in water.

    Ionic compounds are uesed in our every day lives. For example, table salt. Salt consists of positive sodium ions (Na+) and negative chloride ions (Cl-). Ionic compounds are usualy solids with high melting points and can conduct electrical current. Ionic compounds are generally formed from metal and a non-metal elements. Another example is baking powder.

    Covalent compounds
    Covalent compounds form when elements share electrons in a covalent bond to form molecules.Examples are when nonmetals and nonmetals combine and when nonmetals and hydrogen combine. Covalent compounds also have lover melting and boiling pionts then ionic compounds. Some specific exampkes of covalent compounds are carbon minoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and sulfur trioxide. But mostly covalent compounds are very common. because they are nonmetals reacting with nonmetals.

The positively charged portion consists of metal cations and the negatively charged portion is an anion or polyatomic ion. Ionic compounds have strong electrostatic bonds between particles. While ionic inorganic compounds are solids at room temperature and will usually form crystals, organic ionic liquids are of increasing interest.
