  1. In a report titled Out of Balance, released in 2005, the Cunsumers Union and the CPEHN used just-released data from Advertising Age, a popular magazine, to analize the amount of money spent on food brand advertising compared to the governmemts "Five A Day" program (The “Five A Day” program started in California in 1988 as a pilot funded by the National Cancer Institute. The California pilot became a federal public-private partnership program in 1991, with the National Cancer Institute joining forces with a new “Produce for Better Health Foundation.” The program aims to promote healthful eating, prevent cancer and other chronic diseases, and curb weight gain by increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. Public awareness of the program’s dietary recommendation has grown from 8 to 36 percent since the federal program began in 1991. Produce for Better Health has declared September 10-17, 2005 “National Five a Day Week”). The groups found that food, beverage, candy and restaurant advertising hit $11.26 billion in 2004, compared to a mere $9.55 million to advertise the Five A Day campaign, which promotes eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily. The ad budget for the top-spending fast food restaurants alone came in at $2.3 billion, roughly 240 times greater than the communications budget for the 5 A Day campaigns combined. The advertising budget for Snickers, a single brand of candy, is nearly eight times greater than the advertising budget for the entire 5 A Day California and federal programs. this $ 11.26 billion total does not even include any expenditures for less traditional marketing such as product placements in television and movie content; brand internet environments; special promotions; word of mouth marketing; and cell phone and text messaging ads. Therefore, the $11.26 billion overall advertising figure highlighted, thus, vastly understates the true extent of marketing expenditures by these companies. The Surgeon General has warned that the United States is in the midst of an obesity epidemic; some medical experts deem it the most pressing public health issue facing the United States. As of 2002, nearly two-thirds of all adults in the United States were obese or overweight. Obesity has doubled in the past ten years in California, and so the Governor is holding a major obesity summit on the issue on September 15, 2005, in Sacramento. The cost of obesity to California is estimated at $6.4 billion annually, and $47.5 billion nationwide. “The system is completely out of balance,” said Betsy Imholz, Director of Consumers Union’s West Coast Office in San Francisco. “The junk food industry is spending billions of dollars every year to inundate consumers at every turn with their messages to buy and consume food with little or no nutritional value. Public health and nutrition messages—and parental efforts to foster healthful eating habits—are simply being drowned out.”

  2. Food manufacturers spent $7 billion in advertising in 1997. Most of
this advertising focused on highly processed and highly packaged
foods which also tend to be the foods consumed in large quantities
in the United States relative to Federal dietary recommendations
such as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Advertising expenditures
on meat, fruits, and vegetables are negligible. In contrast, the
U.S. Department of Agriculture spent $333.3 million on nutrition
education, evaluation, and demonstrations. This is approximately
what the food industry spent on advertising just for coffee, tea, and
cocoa, or for snacks and nuts; slightly more than half (60 percent)
the amount spent on advertising for carbonated soft drinks, and less
than half the amount spent promoting beer, or candy and gum, or
    breakfast cereals.

Today fast foods are the most advertised. if you were to sit home all day you will see close to 20 comercials for fast foods. but with all these comercials it is causing alot more obesity.

  3. Sat Sun 6pm-12am

During these times their are a lot of different commercials or advertisements that show. Most of the time it depends on what you are watching. For example if your watching a sports program like football or basketball you would see a lot beer commercials or food commercials. These commercials would attract mostly males because of the beers that show before the big game. Feminine shows would probably show make up commercials or clothing line commercials to attract most females. Most fast food restaurants use advertisements to attract more hungry customers.

advertiser in the American economy, the first being automobile's. Fast food counts for 28% of all food advertisement.75 percent of the money used in advertising food is put into TV, 95 percent of the money fast food chains put into advertisement is also put into TV.TV is the favorite way to advertise because it can reach large audiences.

  5. i like to watch the show like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, American next Top Model and show like that. the kind of commercials they have are trying to target mostly females. Since they are "girly" shows, they assume not a lot of males are watching them. they show commercials that advertise make-up, skin products, things that make you look healthy and younger, and weight loss programs such as Jenny Kraig. every now and then they will show a few advertisements about body building and colones and deodorants for me. because even though they are "girly" shows, they still have to shows that would attract men just incase they were watching it too. from the commercials, i sometimes want to buy the products they are trying to advertise because they look like products i wold use or like.

  6. On Sat. and Sun. mornings from about 7am to 11am my little sister watches TV because cartoons are on. During this time, there are many food commercials that target little kids by putting either characters in the commercial or they show other perks like getting a toy in the cereal or by telling you that you "Could" win something. Many of these advertisements are for unhealthy foods, but they still sell because of the children begging their parents for that certain something that they saw on TV. This causes children to become over weight in many cases, about 15% of our youth today is over weight. Thats about twice as high as it was in 1980.

Companies will do anything to sell their product...

  7. Food advertising is targeted at children. They are constantly exposed to advertising
and marketing of junk foods through the Internet, magazines, schools, television, product placements and other means.

Techniques were used to advertise unhealthy foods using premium offers during the most popular programs with children. Also, they used some cartoon characters to get the kid's attention and persuade them to put unhealthy things in their body.

All are designed to boost brand sales and it includes high calorie foods. It is very unhealthy and it influences what children choose to eat.

  8. Marketers spend large amounts of money on advertising, which is one of the most important and visible marketing tools. Advertising is generally thought to have a current-period influence beyond the current period, called the long-term or carryover effect. Advertising and promotion are pivotal to the marketing of the food supply. The U.S. food marketing system is the second largest advertiser in the American economy. Why so much advertising? There are several reasons for it. First, the food market is huge, capturing about 12.5 percent of consumer
income, and there is vigorous competition among food firms to compete for this market. Second, food is a repeat-purchase item, lending itself to swift changes in consumer opinions. Third, food is one of the most highly branded items in the American economy, thus lending itself to major advertising. The Largest advertisers in the marketing system is auto motives, second comes the food industry. Food manufacturer spend most of their money on network television. Marketers advertise different types of products in many different ways. Products like fast-food restaurants, alcohol, food new in grocery stores, and food that hasn't made much income. They advertise this stuff in many different ways, ranging from television commercials, magazine ads, and radio commercials, to newspaper articles, billboards, and fliers. From advertising food away from home the income you would make off 4.3 percent of advertising is 4.1 percent, and the income you would make off alcohol with 1.5 percent of advertising is 1.7 percent.

  9. Advertising in the food industry is essential for profit. Nowadays, food advertising and marketing is largely directed at children and adolescents in the U.S.
For example, Saturday mornings, from 7 a.m to 11 a.m., are a popular time slot for advertisers. Commercials are targeted at adolescents, advertising cereal, lunch foods, snacks, and toys.
One article in the Herald Tribune (March 23, 2008) relates how childrens' health advocates are upset by unhealthy foods being marketed to kids. "Along with the International Obesity Task Force, a group of health professionals, Consumers International this month proposed a 'global code' to govern the marketing of food to children. Among the measures suggested were a ban on television and radio advertising of junk food from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m." The use of toys and cartoon characters encourage kids to want the product even more.
Advertisers have also started using the images of celebrities and professional athletes to market their products. They hope big names will equate with big bucks.
In Britain, where the childhood obesity rate is increasing, officials have tried but soon failed in placing some bans on ads for junk food. Many professionals agree that international action is needed because some of the most rapid increases in childhood obesity are occurring in developing countries.
This whole issue must be big if there is a World Health Assembly meets to discuss this very issue. Sadly, in the end, it all comes down to profit. Marketers and pretty smart when they can take advantage of manipulating adolescents.

  10. I found out that since 1997 the cereal company has been producing commercials for the kids to eat cereal and tell them how healthy cereal is. They produce about 792 commercials a year. they mostly air their commercials every Saturday morning when the kids are watching their saturday morning cartoons. The next big commercial industry in foods are the carbonated drinks. they produce at least 500 commercials every year. Advertising is important because they tell us how to buy their products for them, but they dont tell us whats in their products

  11. Food advertising has huge influence on people. The Food Industry is the second largest money making industry, autobiles being the first. Food advertising help inform children, teens, and adults about foods that would be appealing to them. For example on the weekends when a child would be a watching cartoons and a McDonald commercial would come on, and then kids beg their parents for the toys that is in the bag. For adults and teens they show alot of fast food, weight loss commercials. The Food Industry barely show healthy food commericials, I think they should show more appealing good looking healthy food that make people want to eat it. I would buy THAT!
